Vespasianus Junior

Please add updates or make corrections to the NumisWiki text version as appropriate.
Vespasianus Junior was the son of |Flavius| Clemens, cousin-german of the emperor Domitian and his colleague in the consulship AD 95, and of Domitilla, a relation of Domitian, perhaps the daughter of Domitilla II, the daughter of Vespasian. Domitian had destined the two sons of Clemens as his successors, and discarding their former names, ordered on to be called Vespasian and the other Domitian. |Flavius| Clemens was however put to death during his consulship by order of Domitian, and history is silent as to the fate of his two sons.

The only coins existing of Vespasian Junior are Greek, struck at Smyrna. Obv: OTECPACIANOC NEWTEPOC, laureate head to right. Rev: SMTPNAIWN, Victory walking to right, holding crown and palm; bronze AE 3.
